Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Louisiana Foundation President, Michael Tipton, was named an “Eliminating Racism and Empowering Women” award honoree for his work to promote justice and enhance the lives of women and families. Jane Fonda spoke at the awards event to highlight the honorees' advocacy work and discuss women's empowerment.
On International Women's Day, LinkedIn invited business leaders to open up about the wins and challenges of their professional journeys while discussing overall progress, barriers, and what's next in confronting inequity. Several BCCCC members added thoughts to the post, including Julie Kim, Takeda Pharmaceuticals; Stacy Janiak, Deloitte; Katya Andresen, CIGNA; and Kathryn Kaminsky, PwC.
Michelle Egan was newly elected as the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA) national chair for 2023, a role wherein she will help the association continue its focus on ethics and DE&I. Egan is CCO of Anchorage, Alaska-based Alyeska Pipeline Service Company.
Joanna Rotenberg, president of personal investing at Fidelity Investments, was recently joined by Jessica Alba, founder and chief creative officer of The Honest Company, Randelle Lenoir, and Lorna Kapusta for the Women Talk Money series. “Women’s History Month is a time to celebrate the contributions of women everywhere, and to acknowledge we have much work ahead,” Rotenberg wrote on LinkedIn. “Our Women Talk Money series will spotlight ways we can create change for women today, and for the next generation.”
CVP of government and regulatory affairs, Gina Adams, explained how women are integral to the success of FedEx as a panelist at the International Women’s Day Forum, speaking on modern workplace factors affecting women’s growth in leadership, transportation, and beyond.

Supporting and Empowering Women Around the World
In 2022, Burt's Bees kicked off a three-year, $2 million partnership to introduce beekeeping and expand processing capabilities in shea-producing communities in the northern region of Ghana. The SheKeeper program will introduce beekeeping to women in shea communities. It’s a partnership with our shea and beeswax suppliers, the U.S. Agency for International Development, and the Partnership for Natural Ingredients to help advance women’s economic empowerment and gender equality. Currently, beekeeping around the world is managed predominantly by men, giving this program the potential to scale and improve the livelihoods of more than tens of millions of women collectors and processors across 21 African countries that make up the shea industry.
Kyndryl launched an initiative to advance cybersecurity skills among rural women in India. Under this initiative, Kyndryl will train more than 100,000 women in 500 semi-urban and rural districts in India on cybersecurity risks and best practices. "The Cyber Rakshak initiative is part of Kyndryl’s commitment to India’s broader socioeconomic development, particularly for financial inclusion and building diversity in India’s tech talent pool,” said Lingraju Sawkar, President, Kyndryl India. “The cybersecurity landscape is more complicated by the day, and everyone needs the necessary tools and knowledge to better protect their data and improve their security posture. These are also important technical skills women professionals can bring to high-value career opportunities.”
In 2021, Enbridge donated $15,000 to Woman Aware as part of its commitment to building sustainable communities where it operates. Woman Aware is a New Jersey based domestic violence services agency that helps survivors and their children move on form unsafe situations. The funding will help the organization meet it’s 2023 goals, which include sheltering 215 women and children, answering 6,000 hotline calls and providing non-residential services to 1,800 victims. “We shelter more than 200 women and children on average per year for anywhere from 30-day stays to 90 days or even more,” says Susan Dyckman, Development Director at Women Aware. “Last year, that number rose to 278.”
In honor of International Women’s Day, AEG hosted events in Los Angeles, CA on celebrating women’s achievement and driving gender equity. Partnering with the YMCA of Metropolitan LA, Telemundo, the LA 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Committee, AEG hosted the YMCA’s 2nd Annual Girls Empowerment Day. The event brought more than 2,000 middle school girls from across the LA Unified School District to participate. The Girls Empowerment Day featured a discussion moderated by Telemundo’s Alejandra Ortiz where the panelists shared their personal career journeys, life lessons and tips for building self-esteem. The panelists included: Kara Lynn Joyce, three-time USA Olympic swimmer; Magali Ramirez, Finance and Operations Leader at Zoom Info; Linda Nguyen, Community Engagement Lead, Los Angeles at Microsoft Philanthropies Digital Inclusion and Community Engagement; and AEG’s Tamala Lewis, Senior Director of Community Relations and Foundation for Dignity Health Sports Park.
U.S. Bank sponsored a live art space and the She Media Meaningful Marketplace at the LA3C festival in Downtown Los Angeles. The bank’s art space featured local artist and designer Tamika Quillard, also known as Tamika Q, who created a mixed-media mural honoring Black, Latina, and indigenous women. The marketplace served as a forum for more than a dozen local women- and minority-owned businesses. “U.S. Bank wants to catalyze and enable entrepreneurs to make their dreams happen,” said Greg Cunningham, U.S. Bank Chief Diversity Officer.

Massachusetts Appleseed Center for Law and Justice, a Boston-based research and advocacy nonprofit, received a $50,000 grant from the Liberty Mutual Foundation to expand MA Appleseed’s project providing access to justice for youth experiencing homelessness. The Foundation also provided a $5,000 supplemental operating grant to reflect the impact of inflation on the economy. This grant will help fund the expansion of MA Appleseed’s Legal Education, Advocacy, and Protections (LEAP) Project and enable the organization to raise awareness of the Massachusetts Homeless Youth Handbook, a state-specific resource guide for youth experiencing homelessness. The handbook includes 20 chapters on common legal questions to help young people understand their rights and responsibilities as well as direct them to support systems across the state. Under the guidance of Liberty Mutual’s pro bono program, 29 members of their legal team donated a total of 460 hours to draft chapters of the Massachusetts handbook.
eBay and Oxfam joined forces to take London Fashion Week by storm, staging the Fashion Fighting Poverty 23 show. For one week, all the garments featured were up for grabs in an eBay for Charity auction to support Oxfam’s lifesaving, poverty-fighting work around the world, such as responding to the devastating earthquakes in Turkey and Syria.
Arrow Electronics executives from around the globe took a break from recent business strategy meetings to build 150 bikes for charity. The local employees then donated the finished bikes to second graders in schools that qualify for federal aid, helping some students ride for the first time. "We believe in making a difference in the lives of many and giving back to our communities. Through our leadership team-building event, we did just that," said Rick Marano, president of Arrow's Americas components business.
Nutrien released its 2023 Environment, Social and Governance (ESG) Report. This year’s report outlines Nutrien’s 2022 progress towards its 2030 sustainability commitments, short-term goals and targets performance, and continuing improvement in ESG governance and risk management. Nutrien continues to drive sustainability in the field and in its own operations through direct grower, partner and industry relationships that create measurable, science-based, impacts.
The Hormel Foods Black Leaders & Allies Advancing Cultural Knowledge (BLAACK) business resource group sponsored an essay competition for elementary and middle school students across the United States. Contestants are asked to write an essay with the theme, “What Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Means to Me.”
CoBank and Langston University today announced a multi-year pilot program that will introduce Langston students to CoBank and the Farm Credit System and create connections for students pursuing career opportunities in banking and financial services.
On February 17, Dutch Bros. Coffee and its customers donated more than $900k on its annual Dutch Luv day. On Dutch Luv Day, each of the company's approximately 700 locations donated $1 from every drink sold to local food organizations.
Aramark recently partnered with Triple B Hospitality Group, a Black-owned leader in human-centric hospitality to bring new experiences to Aramark Workplace Experience Group clients who want to empower their people and communities, to overcome labor challenges, and to drive more equitable impact from their businesses. The partnership will help Aramark collaborate more effectively with women- and minority-owned businesses, bridging gaps in economic impact, and linking talented people to stronger, longer-term workplace opportunities.
