Here is how our members have been working to build better business and a better world:

Spotlight on You

BCCCC members featured prominently on the agenda at this week’s virtual International Corporate Citizenship Conference. Here are some memorable quotes from speakers:

“We knew that if we wanted to achieve scale of participation, we had to digitize our offerings. What we needed was an always-on, integrated digital solution that enabled employees to find the opportunities that mattered to them, either locally or globally, and take action, either in-person or virtually.”

Ajay Gopal, Cisco

“Don't be afraid to find ways to measure the unmeasurable. [ESG metrics] will help you in all kinds of business conversations when you confront skeptical voices in the room about how much this work matters. The more you can put the argument in terms of operations, risk reduction, and profit enhancement, the better off you'll be.”

Evan Harvey, Nasdaq

“Much of our work cannot be measured immediately, so we have to remind people, especially managers, of long-term impacts.”

Christine Hoisington, Booz Allen Hamilton

“We partner with communities that know their needs best and build relationships with nonprofits based on transparency and mutual learning. We also know that when a community needs change, we must change with it.”

Teresa Pelletier, Fidelity Investments

“Potentially we have five generations of workers together in the same organization. Gen Z is the most racially and ethnically diverse of the generations and also the largest. We really need to be thinking and rethinking how we engage our employees in our various citizenship programs from ERGs to employee volunteering.”

Elena Sacca Smith, Toyota

“With episodic activities you don’t get connectivity, you don’t get that sense of belonging. Liberty Torchbearers is all about drawing those connections, not just to the causes Liberty cares about, but the causes employees care about.”

Sylvia Stevens-Edouard, Liberty Mutual Insurance

"The thing that I've been focusing on for the past several years is becoming a better thinker on a systems-, enterprise-, and strategy-level. In other words, how do you connect the dots?"

Immanuel Sutherland, Altria Client Services

Some of these speakers will be in attendance at the IN-PERSON International Corporate Citizenship Conference 2022 taking place in Boston on April 24-25. You can join them to learn and network with hundreds of professionals in the CSR field: There’s still time to register.

Mastercard's True Name feature lets cardholders with participating banks use their true first name on their card without requiring a legal name change, in support of the transgender community. Nearly half of transgender or nonbinary people in Canada feel anxiety, embarrassment, and frustration when showing an ID that doesn’t reflect their identity, according to a recent Mastercard survey. Since its debut in the U.S. in 2019, True Name by Mastercard has steadily gathered momentum. In January, the T-Mobile MONEY debit card in the U.S. adopted the True Name feature, and last year Amsterdam-based challenger bank bunq was the first issuer to make the feature available in Europe across in 30 countries. This month, BMO became the first financial institution in Canada to offer the feature, which is now available to banking customers in 32 countries across North America and Europe, through a dozen issuers.

New Balance has officially launched a collaboration with Los Angeles-based inner peace collective, District Vision, with a collection of technical apparel and footwear, and a series of micro-courses that aim to provide consumers with tools designed to increase mental health awareness through running. The micro-courses focus on education through a range of mindfulness topics that aim to help runners explore their minds. The first of these micro-courses will feature Team New Balance athletes Emily Sisson and Brenda Martinez on what they do as professional athletes to get over mental hurdles. New Balance ambassador, rapper, actor and mental health awareness advocate, GaTa, will be featured as he discusses how his recent introduction to the sport of running shifted his approach to mental wellness.

Team Toyota’s Oksana Masters earned a record total of seven medals in seven events at the Paralympic Winter Games Beijing 2022 to become the most decorated U.S. Winter Paralympian of all time. Her three gold and four silver medals increased her career total to 17 Paralympic medals. The Louisville, Kentucky, native is also one of four global Team Toyota athletes featured in the newest multi-episode video series from Olympic Channel and Toyota titled “From the Start.”
