REGULATORY RADAR - The U.K. has replaced the Data Protection Act of 1998 with a new law that provides a modern framework. The bill includes safeguards to ensure freedom of the press, and allow for confidential scientific research.

REGULATORY RADAR - In a win for workforce labor laws and paid time off regulation, The European Court of Justice ruled that companies must pay employees for vacation time they were unable to use during the year.

REGULATORY RADAR - On December 14, 2017, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) voted to dismantle net neutrality. The move is drawing criticism from data privacy and protection advocates, as net neutrality regulates the businesses that connect consumers to the internet.

REGULATORY RADAR - Firing or discriminating against women who breastfeed at work is now prohibited in the state of New Jersey in the U.S. after a labor law passed on January 8, 2018.

REGULATORY RADAR - Iceland’s Equal Pay Standard, part of broader legislation that was passed in June, took effect on January 1, 2018. The law states that companies and institutions employing 25 or more workers on an annual basis will be required to obtain certification of both the creation and implementation of their equal pay systems.

REGULATORY RADAR - In March, 2018, Florida passed a school safety bill that includes the tightening of gun control regulations. The bill passed with a vote of 67-50.

REGULATORY RADAR - On March 5, 2018, Washington became the first state to make it illegal for internet service providers to slow down and block content online.

REGULATORY RADAR - On March 23, 2018, the Department of Justice proposed a rule change that would effectively ban bump stocks, a modification that makes semi-automatic guns fire automatically.

REGULATORY RADAR - On March 12, 2018, Oregon signed the Drug Transparency Act into law, joining the growing number of states that have implemented laws requiring transparency of prescription drug price increases.

REGULATORY RADAR - On March 21, 2018, Congress passed the Allow States and Victims to Fight Online Sex Trafficking Act. The bill expands the existing criminal sex-trafficking law to rope in facilitation of trafficking by web sites.

REGULATORY RADAR -The government of Ontario has passed legislation that establishes the disclosure of compensation of employees and prospective employees. The bill, the Pay Transparency Act of 2018, was passed on May 2, 2018.

REGULATORY RADAR - On May 10, 2018, the directive on the security of Networks and Information Systems (known as the NIS Directive) was put into effect by the European Union (EU). The directive focuses on ensuring that information systems used to process data, control infrastructure, and to transmit information are secured against cyber-attacks.
