Spotlight on You
Matthew Bell has been promoted to global leader of climate change and sustainability services at EY. "Sustainability professionals will need to be more engaged, not less, as we navigate the embedding of sustainability into businesses," Bell said upon announcing the move on LinkedIn. "With over two decades of effort to get this squarely on the agenda, we must remain focused on why we started this mission, and revert to the initial principles of sustainable development to guide a path that avoids over-simplifying or 'greenwashing' actions."

Congratulations to members who released ESG reports:
· Aflac Incorporated announced that the company has released its 2021 Business and Sustainability Report, titled "The Aflac Way: Making a Difference While Balancing Purpose and Profit." The 2021 Business and Sustainability Report provides key insights into Aflac Incorporated's environmental, social and governance (ESG) goals and achievements alongside an overview of operations and financial results for the 2021 fiscal year.
· Hawaiian Electric Industries, Inc. released its 2022 consolidated report describing its updated policies, actions, and performance for full year 2021 with respect to a range of environmental, social, and governance (ESG) matters, including climate-related risks and opportunities. This report includes HEI's first enterprise-wide greenhouse gas emissions inventory, and is the company's third and most comprehensive ESG report.
· LyondellBasell announced the publication of its 2021 sustainability report: "Future Focused." The report details the company's ambitions to help end plastic waste in the environment, address climate change, and support a thriving society, including a pathway to meeting the company's greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reduction targets and ambitious diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) targets.
· Verisk released its 2021 Corporate Social Responsibility Report, which details the company's sustainability strategy, environmental stewardship, and social progress in the workplace and corporate giving. Here's more news from the BCCCC member network:
DTE Energy recently made two grants that made a difference in local communities. Michigan-based Dutton Farm recently received a $30,000 grant from DTE Energy to support the Dutton Farm WorkForce Development program, which provides skill-building, career development and customized employment support to adults with developmental disabilities. Another $835,500 will go toward a new air filtration system inside Ann Visger Preparatory Academy, a building that has had "little to no improvements in years," according to Tarance Wheeler, director of corporate and community affairs in the River Rouge School District.
Morgan Stanley’s Cryptocurrency and Sustainability Research teams did a deep dive on the key ESG issues surrounding crypto. Researchers detailed what they found, saying, "While crypto can offer some societal benefits—such as financial inclusion and the ability to 'be your own bank'—there are also potential downsides, including its carbon footprint, prevalence of theft through hacks and lack of centralized governance."
T. Rowe Price announced a new initiative that expands financial education resources at Morgan State University, a Baltimore-based historical Black college/university (HBCU). Now more than 8,000 students and faculty can increase their financial proficiency with free and unlimited access to Barron's magazine, industry events, career advice from industry experts, and experiential learning opportunities. The program is the latest step in the firm's continued relationship with the school.
