Spotlight on You
Charles River Laboratories shared a conversation in honor of Black History Month with four Black scientists who work for the company. The company said any conversation with Black scientists would be incomplete without acknowledging the barriers, citing a Pew Research Center analysis that finds that just 9% of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Medicine) jobs in the U.S. are held by Black individuals. In this second year of the Q&A, Charles River Labs asked the following scientists about career paths, STEM education, and how to boost representation of underrepresented groups in the workplace:
- Ria Goodwin, Scientist, Charles River’s Early Discovery site
- Julius Haruna, Senior Director of Pathology Services
- Allison Williams, Director of Veterinary and Professional Services
- Omer Salih, Director, Manufacturing Sciences & Technology
Nikki Clifton, president of social impact, UPS, and the UPS Foundation, penned an op-ed in the Atlanta Journal Constitution titled Human trafficking’s thrived in pandemic. Clifton says, according to the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, the pandemic has heightened the threat of human trafficking due to the time people spend isolated from one another and increased time online. Clifton believes that acknowledging the prevalence of human trafficking is important for business leaders to take action, and views addressing it is part of "UPS’s commitment to build safer, more resilient, and inclusive communities around the world.”
Demesha McKinney Hill, head of diversity and community relations at Janus Henderson, expressed excitement to be a guest speaker on a History Month webinar by LGBT Great, a global membership organization focused on developing LGBT+ diversity and inclusion within the financial services community. The webinar explored role of history in supporting societal change, using storytelling to advance equality and inclusion, and considerations as organizations welcome Generation Z.
James Richardson, power plant director at CPS Energy, was featured by the company during Black History Month for his leadership capabilities and resilience in the face of challenges. Richardson described how his focus on caring for those he leads has helped him build trust with employees that at first looked at him like an outsider. Today, Richardson is responsible for overseeing more than 100 employees at the O.W. Sommers Power Plant.
