Laura Azevedo, manager of corporate responsibility at Alexion Pharmaceuticals, celebrated the Alexion Charitable Foundation's commitment of $1.1M in grants to the National Organization for Rare Disorders and Global Genes, two leading nonprofits dedicated to serving the rare disease community. “Exciting day for the Alexion Charitable Foundation!” exclaimed Azevedo on LinkedIn.
Applied Materials, Inc. announced that Chris Librie has joined the company as director of ESG, corporate sustainability and reporting. Chris most recently served as director of corporate social responsibility at Samsung Semiconductor, Inc. where he led the company’s social investments and regional response to the COVID-19 pandemic. “I am very excited to be joining Applied Materials as the company aims to use its leadership position in semiconductor and display technology to enable a more sustainable future in collaboration with suppliers and customers around the world,” said Librie.
Janet Stovall, executive communications manager at UPS, took a moment to share her powerful TED Talk, How to get serious about diversity and inclusion in the workplace. “Almost two years ago, I stepped onto the red dot on the TED stage and said, ‘I believe business can dismantle racism,’” said Stovall. “Recently, I was asked if I’d say the same thing today. Yes. Yes, I would.”

New in CSR reports: MAPFRE Insurance's Fundación MAPFRE has published A Challenge, a Hope [PDF download], the company's record of activities to combat COVID-19, including the following commitments: investing 35 million euros in 2020 to combat the disease and to find a vaccine; acquiring and distributing medical supplies to 27 countries; and supporting economic programs for companies and the self-employed to secure employment.
Merck has announced that it is expanding its Safer Childbirth Cities Initiative beyond its current 10 U.S. cities to help improve maternal health outcomes, and is inviting organizations to apply for funding as part of a second cohort. "The U.S. is the only high-income country where maternal mortality is on the rise. Racial disparities are stark and persistent," says Merck’s website. "The Safer Childbirth Cities Initiative aims to support community-based organizations in U.S. cities with a high burden of maternal mortality and morbidity to implement evidence-based interventions and innovative approaches to reverse the country’s maternal health trends."
Verizon announced that it has joined the Climate Pledge, a commitment co-founded by Amazon and Global Optimism to meet the goals of the Paris Agreement ten years early. As a signatory, Verizon has committed to be net zero carbon across its businesses by 2040. The company has issued at $1 billion green bond to invest in accelerating the company's sustainability efforts, including powering operations with 50% renewable energy by 2025.
