Taking Care of Us: A Dyadic Intervention for Heart Failure

MPIs: Karen S. Lyons/Christopher S. Lee NIA/NIH, R21, R21AG068715
Our pilot study is comparing two supportive programs for couples living with heart failure—a novel, couple-based, relational program, Taking Care of Us, and a standard educational program, SUPPORT. Each program is delivered by zoom and takes place over approximately two months. The overall goal of the study is to test the feasibility and acceptability of the Taking Care of Us program and its preliminary efficacy on how couples manage heart failure and the physical, mental, and relational health of the couple.

Heart Failure, Symptoms, Activity, and Response (HF STARS)

This program of research is focused on the measurement of biobehavioral factors underpinning the perception and response to symptoms among patients with heart failure. The Heart Failure Somatic Perception Scale v.3 (HFSPS) was developed, psychometrically tested, and translated into several languages. The interplay of physiological (e.g. biomarkers, metabolites, heart rate variability), psychological (e.g. depression, anxiety), and clinical factors are being explored in addition to self-report of symptoms using the HFSPS. To support judicious use of health care resources, the purpose of this research is to identify which patients require more intensive medical oversight versus interventions targeting self-care skill.
