We are a community of students, faculty, and staff who are committed to theatre education that combines scholarship and art. We seek to foster creativity, critical thinking, excellence, and professionalism through the integration of courses, productions, workshops, and other activities. We seek to understand theatre as a means of artistic expression and a form of entertainment, but also as a window onto history, a method of inquiry into all things human, and a vehicle for social change.

I chose BC Theatre primarily for its exceptional faculty. The program fosters a remarkable dynamic between faculty and students, characterized by a shared love for exceptional theatre and a profound commitment to mutual learning.

Favorite BC class or professor? Luke Jorgensen! He's been an incredible mentor throughout my time here at BC, and I cannot have imagined my experience in this department without him.
What have you enjoyed most about BC's Theatre Department? Working on the productions! From acting in Twelfth Night my freshman year to Assistant Directing RENT my senior year, each production fosters an incredibly unique experience that makes this department (and the people in it) so special.

The faculty in BC's Theatre Department truly care about you as a whole person. They are excellent resources not just for course selection or career discernment, but as conversation partners for the day-to-day trials and tribulations of college life. The faculty want you to succeed, but based on your definition of success, not theirs.
Hometown: Los Angeles, Calif.
Favorite BC class or professor? BIPOC Plays for the 21st Century with Dr. Courtney Elkin Mohler. This class exposed me to plays and playwrights who are less often produced on American stages or read in traditional theatre studies classes. Courtney structured the class to be discussion-oriented and always incorporated our feedback into lesson plans.
Why did you choose this program? When I was applying to colleges, I knew I wanted to study theatre but I also knew I didn't want to only study theatre. At BC, I have abundant opportunities for performance and production without the competitive nature often present in theatre; I can also take a wide range of theatre classes while also majoring or minoring in other departments. Moreover, the department's cross-disciplinary approach to theatre is not only more useful for post-graduate life, but allows for a wider diversity of interests among students in the department.

I really wanted a program that would help me become a well-rounded artist with knowledge and passion about various aspects of the world and culture. I believe that approach makes our storytelling richer and our understanding of the human experience more holistic.
Hometown: Basking Ridge, N.J.
Favorite BC class or professor? Directing 1 with Dr. Courtney Mohler was particularly rewarding and exciting, but there isn't a single course or professor in the department I couldn't speak highly of. They're all terrific!
What have you enjoyed most about BC's Theatre Department? I've enjoyed how many opportunities there are to get hands-on experience in BC's Theatre Department. So many productions happen each semester that there is never a dearth of chances to get involved if you want to. If the adage is true that you learn, in part, by doing, BC Theatre provides an environment ripe for learning, both in the classroom and in practice.

I enjoy the versatility of my experience within the BC Theatre Department. I have been able to direct, set design, choreograph, perform, stage manage, and more, all with the support of mentors within BC Theatre. The faculty care about my education and growth within my college experience, and I am grateful for the strong alumni network I have been able to connect with as well.
Hometown: Bellmore, N.Y.
Favorite BC class or professor? Contemporary Theatre and Drama in London taught by Professor Scott T. Cummings has definitely been my favorite course in the Theatre Department. This course was a one-month journey through the London theatre scene. I loved getting to discuss the shows we saw and exploring everything from the West End to fringe puppet theatre.
Why did you choose to major in Theatre at BC? I chose to Major in Theatre and Economics because I love to learn about theatre as well as the business of theatre. I am interested in everything that goes into making a production possible, and am passionate about the accessibility of theatre. Boston College allows me to double major and study both fields so deeply. I chose BC’s program because it allowed me to still focus on production without limiting myself to a single concentration or track.

I love how BC students are such a diverse and enriching group of people. So many people here have changed and enhanced my life immensely.
Hometown: Northbridge, Mass.
Favorite BC class or professor? Theatre for Youth with Professor Luke Jorgensen. We spent the entire semester rehearsing children's theatre, and then performed to local schools in the Boston community. The kids absolutely loved it!
What have you enjoyed most about BC's Theatre Department? The community around BC Theatre is incredible. I joined MT Wing freshman year during the pandemic and found a crazy, energetic, and artistic group of people who love the performing arts as much as I do, and I've been hooked ever since!
