2018 International Corporate Citizenship Conference Begins Today in Los Angeles

Each year, the Boston College Center for Corporate Citizenship gathers CSR leaders from around the world for two and a half days of learning, sharing, and growing. This year, the Conference is hosted by Travelers, a company who has, for more than 160 years, helped individuals and organizations foster resilience, invest in responsibility, and deliver results.

Over the course of this event, top leaders from around the world will join industry experts in Los Angeles to share how they are investing today in what will make them stronger later. Attendees will walk away with a deeper understanding of how they can develop strong corporate social responsibility programs that ensure a sustainable and prosperous future while delivering strong returns now.

Here are just a few things we’re excited about exploring in Los Angeles:

Insights from CSR leaders

Today, Los Angeles will become the home base of some of the CSR field’s greatest thinkers and achievers. During seven illuminating general sessions, attendees will hear how these leaders develop strategic CSR strategies to deliver value to their companies and communities. Speakers include but aren’t limited to:

Numerous networking opportunities

Strong networks offer corporate responsibility professionals the flexibility and support to maintain resilience in their professional journeys—and in their programs. To help attendees develop and strengthen these networks, we’ve built ample time into the Conference for sharing and collaboration. From summits and moderated breakfasts to receptions and coffee breaks, we encourage our attendees to connect and learn from one another. Below are just a few activities available during the event:

On-site Volunteer Project

On Monday, attendees will have the opportunity to act as honorary "Disney VoluntEARs" by joining The Walt Disney Company's team of heroes to help assemble comfort kits for local children's hospitals. Participants will network with their colleagues while packing kits with coloring books, activity books, crayons, playing cards, a Mickey Mouse plush, a Mickey Mouse figurine, and custom Marvel comic books. By the end of the Conference, 750 kits will be donated to benefit area children.

Corporate “Fitizens” Sunrise Yoga

On Monday and Tuesday mornings, attendees will have the option of opening the day with a refreshing sunrise yoga session. Yoga mats will provided for use, but if you want to participate in this limited-space event, preregistration is required.

A session for every issue

Corporate citizenship practitioners work to advance sustainable progress by using the core competencies of their particular companies to address their particular ESG impacts. There is no one-size-fits-all formula to  execute CSR effectively, which is why we offer more than 25 different breakout sessions throughout the event—each focused on a particular aspect of corporate social responsibility. From workshops, to panel discussions, to in-depth case studies, our breakout sessions are all moderated by leading CSR experts and filled with some of the most innovative, dedicated practitioners in the field today. Attendees should reference the Conference App, which has been generously provided by Pitney Bowes, for a full list of sessions, as well as information about breakout tracks, below are just a few we’re excited about:

Leveraging your greatest asset: Your employees

Companies today are being asked to address an array of social and environmental issues in their local communities and around the globe. Whether it be improving science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) education or committing to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), leading companies have learned that success is dependent on engaging their greatest assets—their employees. In this session, hear how companies are reaching and engaging employees in their corporate citizenship efforts.

A new frontier: How investors are using your reports

"A company’s ability to manage environmental, social, and governance matters demonstrates the leadership and good governance that is so essential to sustainable growth, which is why we are increasingly integrating these issues into our investment process." These words by Larry Fink of BlackRock, the world’s largest institutional investor, help underscore the value of the work done by those in corporate social responsibility and the importance of reporting on it publicly. In this session, attendees will hear from sustainability reporting leaders about the business case for reporting as well as how to navigate the many reporting standards and frameworks.

Disaster preparedness and relief: Effective strategies

Recently, natural disasters and humanitarian crises have devastated communities around the world. When these disasters strike, businesses have emerged as leaders in preparedness, relief, and recovery efforts. In this session, learn how your peers have developed short and long-term strategies that prepare them to help communities in need.
