Three ways our members celebrate Earth Day

Today, April 22nd, marks the 44th annual Earth Day, a worldwide celebration of commitment to the protection of the environment. According to National Geographic more than 1 billion people around the world will celebrate earth day in more than 190 countries. This annual day of action allows people of all walks of life, from individuals to major corporations, to demonstrate their commitment to the protection of the Earth. Below are three ways companies are participating in Earth Day:

1) On-site Events:

Projects that can be executed on-site are a convenient way to provide employees the opportunity to participate in Earth Day celebrations without requiring them to leave the workspace. Earth Day events can be simple to execute, but provide effective means for engaging employees. In the past some of our members have hosted projects such as:

  • Earth Day fairs
  • Tree planting events
  • Recycling drives
  • Environmental movie screenings
  • Carpool-to-work day
  • “Lights out” day to encourage more efficient use of office lights
  • Pledge an Act of Green

2) Community Service and Action:

Reaching out to local government officials, non-profits, or businesses can develop stronger ties with the community while also creating greater awareness for your corporate citizenship program. Examples include:

  • Partnering with local charities
  • Collaborating with a local car dealership to bring green cars to the office for employees to test drive
  • Hosting a day of service for employees (example; clean up a local park or stream)
  • Contributing to the Green Cities campaign in your local area through the Earth Day Network

3) Award & Recognition

Taking the time to recognize employees who have made an effort to reduce their carbon footprint, whether at the workplace or in their personal lives, shows appreciation for their efforts and encourages others to follow suit. You can also encourage employees to take the Earth Day Network’s Footprint Calculator quiz for an eye-opening look at how your lifestyle impacts the resources of the planet.
