At Insperity, employee volunteerism is central to supporting community involvement efforts

At Insperity, giving back to the communities where employees live and work has long been a cornerstone of the company’s values. Insperity’s commitment to community involvement encompasses four specific areas of focus, including health and human services, education, military and veterans, and animal service organizations. Employee volunteerism plays an integral role in supporting these initiatives.

Insperity’s Community Involvement Department generates enthusiasm for volunteering and appeals to its employees’ passions on a national level. This is accomplished with the help of district administrators in each market who serve on Insperity’s Volunteer Council and are responsible for coordinating local community involvement activities for employees. The Community Involvement Department, along with the Volunteer Council, promotes Insperity’s culture of giving and organizes nationwide campaigns in order to create a consistent message of volunteerism.

In addition, Insperity’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Report serves as a tool to communicate the company’s workplace and community initiatives. “The CSR Report is a roadmap for employees who want to learn more about how the company is giving back, and for clients who not only rely on Insperity as a trusted adviser, but also as a good corporate citizen,” said Corinn Price, Insperity director of community involvement. “It serves as a benchmark for comparison to other companies regarding philanthropy, employee health and safety.”

Insperity offers a wide range of opportunities to encourage employees to participate in volunteerism:

  • Volunteer PTO – Employees are allowed 12 paid hours per quarter to volunteer during work hours.
  • Volunteering Pays – Once an employee has recorded at least 50 hours with the same organization in a 12-month period, he or she is eligible for a $500 grant for that charity.
  • Log In for Charity – Employees who record their personal volunteer hours are automatically entered in a quarterly drawing for a $1,000 grant to the charity of their choice. This not only encourages employees to volunteer but also helps Insperity capture their volunteer hours.
  • Volunteer Recognition Awards – Employees who exhibit outstanding volunteer efforts each month, quarter and year are recognized internally and become eligible to receive grants in varying amounts for the charity of their choice.

Recruiting, hiring and retaining employees who make a difference in the workplace helps to fulfill Insperity’s mission of helping businesses succeed so communities prosper.

Senior management is encouraged to serve on the boards of local nonprofit organizations and executives support the fundraising and volunteer activities of nonprofits or causes that resonate with them. Senior managers engage in volunteerism as a team-building activity.

Entire departments have served lunch at a local Ronald McDonald House and collected food for neighboring shelters. The Community Involvement Department provides quarterly reports that summarize the volunteer activities of each office and its senior manager.

“Volunteering as a group is a great way for employees to learn about each other, support nonprofit organizations, and spread the mission of Insperity,” Price added.

Some of Insperity’s Community Involvement best practices include:

  • Philanthropy as the cornerstone of the company culture. Philanthropy is so important that it is one of the company’s values: “Contributing to the communities where we live and work.”
  • Know the audience. The Community Involvement Department conducts a survey every few years to ensure that volunteer activities and giving align with employee expectations.
  • Have fun and be creative. It is important for employees to have fun while volunteering and be exposed to new ways to get involved.
  • Knowledge is the key to success. It is important for members of the Community Involvement Department to utilize training sessions, conferences, webinars, luncheons or other avenues to remain up-to-date on best practices.
