Winston Center Closes 10th Anniversary Celebration

The Winston Center Closed out its 10th anniversary celebration in a packed Robsham Theater to hear the wisdom of David McCullough.

Program Highlights

WINSTON COLLABORATION

The Center partnered with the student group Organization for Latin American Affairs (OLAA) to bring together experts and students of the Venezuelan diaspora to talk about the implications and future of the ongoing Venezuelan crisis. The panel, moderated by Fr. Gustavo Morello, assistant professor of sociology, featured Dr. Miguel Ángel Santos, a senior research fellow at the Center for International Development at Harvard, Ricardo López, a professor of economics at Brandeis International Business School, and Venezuelan BC students Andrea Mauco, CSOM '19, and Rodolfo Postigo, MCAS '19.

Raise statues to honor our teachers

For the 10th anniversary of the Winston Center’s founding, the very first Clough Colloquium speaker, American historian David McCullough, returned to the Heights to talk and sign copies of his newest book, The American Spirit.

Jacqueline Novogratz, the founder and president of Acumen Fund, an international nonprofit investment group aimed at helping people lift themselves out of poverty, and author of the New York Times best seller The Blue Sweater, spoke to students about how to create “a world beyond poverty.”

Building community

Stockton, California, Mayor Michael Tubbs was the Center’s Jane Jacobs Lecture featured speaker. He talked about his motivation for entering public service, his plans for the city, and how he believes current students can contribute to positive change in their local communities.

Lunch with a Leader

This semester’s Lunch with a Leader series featured alumni Jeff Larson ’93 and Brendan Hickey ’95, who talked about how their BC experience helped them in their career development, and Irene Chini, a research fellow at Universita Ca’ Foscari Venezia, who talked about urban regeneration in Venice, Italy.

Jenks Leadership Program

In the fall we created the Jenks Student Advisory Council for Jenks alumni who are still enrolled at Boston College. Twelve students joined this council and will serve as ambassadors for the program and unofficial mentors to current Jenks students, and contribute to the overall development of the program.

Winston Ambassador Program

The Winston Center Ambassador Program promotes a community of leaders who are shaped by events and each other. It is a program that understands leadership as encompassing and exemplifying compassion, empathy, and self-knowledge.

Student Grants

The Center awarded seven travel grants to students who traveled to Cuba, Costa Rica, the United Arab Emirates, Kenya, California, and Connecticut; and four internship grants were awarded to students who had unpaid summer internships at the United Nations; a NY district attorney's office; a nonprofit organization in India; and a social entrepreneurship organization in Ohio.

The Winston Center's director of research reflects on the last decade. And the Winston Center provided grants to the McMullen Museum and the Core curriculum for programs that engage the intellectual exploration of leadership and ethics in business and society.
