The Office of the Dean of Students contributed to my growth and success at Boston College by offering personalized support and mentoring, professional development opportunities, and support during the transitions of a graduate education.

My engagement with the Office of the Dean of Students at Boston College deepened my understanding of community and leadership by emphasizing the importance of support, inclusivity, and personal responsibility. Through DOS's guidance, I learned that effective leadership involves listening, empowering others, and fostering a sense of belonging within a community, which ultimately contributes to collective success and personal growth.

The folks in this office are advocates for all students and want to empower students to reflect and grow in order to make the best decisions for themselves and the community. They want to meet you where you are at in your BC journey. They're also very personable, kind, empathetic, and funny—truly wonderful people looking out for you!
Hometown: Richmond, VA
School / Program: LSEHD, M.A. in Higher Education
As a graduate assistant within Student Conduct, I learned how to approach difficult conversations with students with empathy and empower them to make healthy decisions. My time in DOS showed me the importance of actively listening to students in order to meet them where they are at in their BC journey. It also enhanced my leadership skills by challenging me to manage many students' schedules and learning styles, and helping them come to a consensus when making decisions that impact their peers.

One memorable experience was organizing the Breakfast Club Neighborhood Clean-Up. Seeing students come together to improve their community was quite an inspiring experience for me. It wasn’t just about cleaning, it was more about strengthening the bond between students and their neighbors while fostering civic responsibility.
Hometown: Ghana (West Africa)
School / Program: LSEHD, International and Comparative Higher Education
The Office of the Dean of Students provided me with invaluable mentorship and guidance, especially as I navigated a new cultural and professional environment. My supervisor, Andrew Klopstein, and colleagues created a supportive and inclusive space, encouraging me to grow by recognizing both my strengths and areas for improvement. Also, the weekly meetings offered learning opportunities through real-life case studies and collaborative problem-solving.

The support I’ve received in this office has fostered a deep sense of belonging at BC.
Hometown: Lynn, MA
School & Major: MCAS/ Sociology (pre med)
The Office of the Dean of Students has been an invaluable source of support and encouragement throughout my time at BC. During my freshman year, I vividly remember feeling lost and overwhelmed, particularly with the demands of my First-Year Writing Seminar. I was struggling to write a paper and it came up during a chat with Melissa Woolsey, one of the Deans. She patiently worked with me while I bounced ideas around, offering guidance and feedback that transformed my approach to the assignment. I ended up doing very well on that essay. This memory is special to me because It wasn’t just about improving my writing skills, it was about feeling seen and supported by someone who genuinely cared.
