Drivers of Corporate Citizenship

Companies today are increasingly being looked to by society to provide leadership with governments and other stakeholders in addressing a whole host of local and global social challenges from HIV/AIDS to the gap between rich and poor. In this environment the context for understanding business risk and opportunity is being redefined. Companies now must be much more knowledgeable about the impact of their business on society and the environment and understand the concerns of key stakeholders.

The Center’s research programs explore the forces driving the changing relationship between business and society and how business leadership is reacting to these changes.

Building Reputation Here, There and Everywhere: Worldwide views on local impact of corporate responsibility
This joint report from the Boston College Center and Reputation Institute provides some baseline statistics on the public’s attitudes about companies in 27 countries, looks at factors that seem to be shaping views of corporate reputation and responsibility in these countries, and highlights at least some of the implications for managers with responsibilities in these areas. 


What do Surveys Say about Corporate Citizenship?
This white paper reviews the many surveys on corporate citizenship - our own as well as those of GlobeScan, GolinHarris, the Reputation Institute, PricewaterhouseCoopers, McKinsey & Co., Cone Inc., Fleishman Hillard and others - to focus on select facets of citizenship that can be better understood, interpreted, and managed through survey data. It presents a look at these findings followed by general thoughts on company-specific surveys on citizenship and how they can assist a business.


Mapping Stakeholder Landscapes: The influence and impact of global stakeholders
Mapping Stakeholder Landscapes describes how stakeholder groups differ around the world and the need to balance the variation at the local level with interests shared globally. It examines nine countries: Chile, China, Germany, Italy, Mexico, the Philippines, South Africa, United Kingdom and United States. The report is the result of a one-year research project by the Global Education Research Network (GERN), a network of 12 global institutions, including the Boston College Center, focused on responsible business working together. Funded by the UPS Foundation, this is the second report on global corporate citizenship produced by the GERN.

United Nations Global Compact Leading Companies Retreat Summary Report
The Global Compact Office, in partnership with the Boston College Center for Corporate Citizenship and AccountAbility, invited a group of global companies participating in the Global Compact to a two-day retreat at the end of June 2008. The group discussed at length the expectations of transnational companies concerning the Global Compact initiative and their experience in implementing its principles in their complex and vast organizations. This report details observations on the dialogue and a synthesis of the issues and insights from that meeting.

This Center monograph is based on interviews with 48 top executives - including 26 CEOs - representing 27 major multinational companies from a cross-section of industries to learn what they see as the trends and challenges facing business and wider society in the 21st century.

Peggy Siegel, an expert on business partnerships in education reform efforts, offers her perspective on the role business must play to halt the continuing deterioration of the education system. Siegel looks at past business/education partnerships, what worked and what didn’t, and identifies the lessons they provide for tackling the 21st century challenge.
